the quiet ones among us

Here are some common misunderstandings about the quieter ones among us.
1. Introverts don't like to socialize. Not true. But they may prefer smaller gatherings over large crowded rooms. They may want to have a deep, rich conversation rather than hear what you did this past weekend. They tend to like meaning and depth over chatter and small talk. Nothing wrong with casual conversation, but most introverts are just ready to dive right in and get to know someone on a more meaningful level. It’s just the currency.

2. Introverts are shy. Shyness is very different. Shyness is about anxiety, fear of being judged. Introverts just prefer things to be on the quieter side. Shy people can also be introverts. And an introvert can be shy too, but they are not a package deal.

3. Introverts don't make good leaders. This one is really not true. Introverts have special skills that make for GREAT leaders: listen deeply, don't have to be center stage, promote others, mentor, and pay attention to patterns. They are great at hanging with complex challenges until they come up with a solution. They don’t mind things being messy for a while until they are clear. They also love working with self-directed, high performing teams and research shows that these kinds of teams thrive under an introvert’s leadership.
